Strain Testifies Before U.S. Senate Committee

Urges a streamlined and expedited H2-B process

May 7, 2015

Baton Rouge, La. (May 7, 2015) Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., traveled to our nation’s capital Wednesday, May 6,  to testify at a hearing before the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship who were examining impacts of federal labor and safety laws on small seafood operations.

At issue are the U.S. Department of Labor recent policy changes for the H-2B guest worker program which is used to fill labor needs for seasonal businesses like seafood processors. The changes are impacting Louisiana’s crawfish industry significantly as employers are unable to hire enough seasonal workers.

Lafayette seafood processor Frank Randol also submitted testimony at yesterday’s hearing.
