Morehouse Fire Update
March 9, 2016
Baton Rouge, La. (March 8, 2016) – Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) firefighters battled a wildfire in Morehouse Parish Tuesday afternoon near the Arkansas state line. The wildfire burned approximately 200 acres of land in Louisiana and an estimated 100 acres in Arkansas. It also threatened numerous homes and other structures north of Beekman, La. off of Ten Road.
Five LDAF dozer crews, six Arkansas Forestry Commission dozer crews and local fire departments responded to the blaze.
Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., said, “While strong winds contributed to spreading the fire, wet weather conditions ultimately helped mitigate the threat. Without the rain, we could have had a very serious situation on our hands. With safety and property at risk, this is why I work with our legislators to educate them on the need to keep our firefighting resources intact.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
