Merryville man arrested for arson

August 13, 2019

Baton Rouge, La. (August 13, 2019) – Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) investigators say 47-year-old Gerald W. Neely of Merryville, La. is accused of intentionally setting a wooded area on fire in Beauregard Parish.

Neely was arrested for one count of simple arson July 16, 2019. The LDAF received a complaint on July 12, 2019, of several woods fires near Division St. in Merryville, La.

“We aggressively pursue arson cases. Not only is arson a threat to property, but it can also endanger lives,” said Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M. “We’ve recently seen a decrease in wildfires, some the result of arson, handled by the LDAF. We truly believe our pursuit of these suspects, arrests made and prosecution of those individuals are the reasons why we are seeing fewer cases.”

Following an investigation, Neely was arrested and charged.  Neely was booked into Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Detention Center. Bond was set at $5,000. Neely bonded out of jail on Aug. 5.
