LDAF Rolls Out Mobile Pet Shelter

Baton Rouge, La. (July 13, 2019) – Today, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) dispatched its mobile pet shelter to the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Southern University’s campus which is now sheltering evacuees.
“In stressful situations, people are often comforted knowing their pets are also out of harm’s way and close by,” said Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M. “We have learned from past experience that people will remain in harm’s way before leaving without their pets.”
The mobile pet shelter was sent to F.G. Clark at the request of Animal Control Director Hilton Cole through the East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.
The mobile pet shelter can hold approximately 50 pets. It is a tractor trailer equipped with metal cages, generator, battery power and a cleaning station. It has an air ventilation system to provide proper air circulation and temperature for the pets. The LDAF has two mobile pet shelters.
The LDAF is designated by the Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Assistance and Disaster Act to transport and shelter household pets during declared emergencies
The LDAF also continues to provide emergency fuel to first responders and for other emergency related activities.
