LDAF Response and Recovery Continues for Isaac

Baton Rouge, LA (September 4, 2012) – The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) continues to coordinate efforts to shelter pets that evacuated with their owners during Hurricane Isaac. Monday night, 26 dogs and one ferret were moved from the shelter in Haughton to the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales. Twenty-eight dogs and one cat from Haughton and five dogs from Alexandria shelters will be moved to an animal control facility in Belle Chase today. There are 24 dogs remaining in the pet shelter in Alexandria, La.
The hay drops to stranded cattle in Plaquemines Parish are complete. LDAF continues to distribute donated grain. LDAF also continues to monitor salt water tolerance levels for the cattle. To date, those tests indicate the water is safe for the cattle to drink. The department is also distributing LSU AgCenter educational materials on how to safely feed and water storm affected animals.

You can never predict how challenging a storm may become. We have very supportive teams of people who continue to work hard during the recovery efforts,” said LDAF Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M.
