LDAF places grain elevator into receivership
March 14, 2008
The Department of Agriculture and Forestry placed Central Louisiana Grain Cooperative, Inc. of Boyce into receivership Thursday afternoon, Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., said today.
“The grain elevator is in receivership in order to facilitate continued contractual payments owed to farmers doing business with Central Louisiana Grain,” Strain said. “We have staff on site reviewing contracts and gathering information. Our goal is to help farmers and others obtain the payments they are due for the commodities delivered.”
Farmers and elevators sign contracts to buy and sell grain during a crop season. If the elevator is unable to pay the farmers, the department has the authority to place the elevator in receivership.
“The department will essentially conduct the day to day operations of the elevator to try to fulfill its obligations to the farmers,” Strain explained. “It is unfortunate when this situation arises but we must do everything within our power to protect the farmers and all others involved and ensure they are paid.”
Strain said additional details will be available when contracts and information available at the site have been reviewed and processed by department staff.
