LDAF Commissioner and Governor to Visit Sugarcane Farm

Baton Rouge, La. (July 18, 2018) – Tomorrow, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., and Governor John Bel Edwards travel to Plaquemine, La. to tour a sugarcane farm and hear from local agriculture and forestry producers. This is a continuation of the listening tour that was held last November.

“We have traveled across the state and visited farms featuring different commodities grown in Louisiana. This time, we will visit a sugarcane farm, but all agriculture and forestry producers are invited to discuss current issues they are facing. I also expect some discussion on tariffs and the Farm Bill,” said Strain.

“Agriculture is a vital part of our state’s economy and hearing first-hand about the issues that matter the most to the hardworking men and women who are responsible for its success is important in understanding how state government can better partner with them to advance this industry,” Edwards. “Sugarcane is one of the state’s essential crops, and I am very excited to learn more about it and continue touring farms across our great state with Commissioner Strain.”

Strain plans to use this information at the state and federal levels in support of the agriculture and forestry industries. The agriculture and forestry industries are valued at approximately $13 billion in Louisiana.
