Commissioner Strain statement on the signing of Phase One Trade Agreement between the U.S. and China
Baton Rouge, La. (Jan. 15, 2020) – “Our President, Donald J. Trump has secured a historic and unparalleled phase one trade agreement with China. As a direct result of his leadership, we have achieved substantial progress towards free trade and a level playing field that benefits American agriculture, manufacturing, energy and services. China has agreed to purchase $40 to $50 billion a year of American agricultural products. The benefit to our economy is unprecedented.
“Further, China’s agreement to structural reforms in areas of intellectual property, technology transfer, agriculture, financial services, currency, and foreign exchange will result in long term stability between the world’s two largest economies. This agreement paves the way for phase two which will set the course for trade and economic prosperity for generations to come.”
