Best Management Practices and Statistics

The Louisiana Office of Forestry and the Louisiana Forestry Association are the leaders in implementing Louisiana’s forestry best management practices (BMPs). The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972, Public Law 92-500 (and as amended by Section 319, 1986), require the management of non-point sources of water pollution from sources including forest related activities.

The Louisiana Office of Forestry and the Louisiana Forestry Association have developed programs to guide forest landowners, managers and timber harvesters toward voluntary compliance with this act. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes the use of BMPs as an acceptable method of reducing non-point source pollution.

The Louisiana Forestry Association, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center have taken on the task of training landowners, managers and timber harvesters in the use of BMPs and conducting surveys on the implementation and effectiveness of forestry BMPs.
